About the Journal
The main goal of our journal is to become a professional forum for humanities scholars and social scientists studying the history, languages, and cultures of Northern Europe, the Baltic region, and the Russian Northwest, with particular focus on Karelia (or even 'Karelias,' considering the geographical and historical-cultural complexity of this concept). The journal also emphasizes the study of diverse connections between Nordic Europe and the Baltics with other regions, primarily with Russia throughout history, from antiquity to the present day. In this context, interest in Karelia is largely due to its role as a borderland and contact zone. The journal's thematic scope also includes political and economic relations of Nordic European and Baltic states with the rest of the world, emigrant experiences, travel, cultural and linguistic interactions, the existence of regional languages beyond their primary territories, and related topics.
Studia Nordica is the successor to the 'Nordic and Baltic Studies Review' almanac, published from 2016 to 2023 (https://nbsr.petrsu.ru/). We hope to continue and further develop the research direction established by this publication.
The journal is conceived as an electronic open-access publication in both Russian and English, initially published twice a year, with plans to increase frequency to four issues annually. All articles undergo mandatory anonymous peer review. The journal's editorial ethical standards and guidelines comply with those accepted by leading international academic publishers.
